9 years of Swachh Bharat Mission - Survey Exposes Dismal State of Public Toilets

A recent survey by social media platform LocalCircles highlights widespread dissatisfaction with the state of public toilets in India, impeding the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The survey, conducted across 340 districts with over 39,000 respondents, reveals that around 58% of Indians believe public toilets constructed under the mission are in bad condition, discouraging their use. Shockingly, over one-fourth of respondents refrained from using these facilities, and only 18% found them usable. Additionally, a mere 3% considered free public toilets usable.

This revelation underscores the urgent need for improved public toilet maintenance over building new ones, according to Sachin Taparia, founder of LocalCircles. As India marks nine years of the Swachh Bharat Mission, these findings should prompt a reevaluation of policies and a renewed focus on enhancing public toilet conditions.

OD (Open Defecation) - A persistent social problem in India, due to human behaviour and poor public facilities

2. South African Community Rescues Endangered Seahorses and Shellfish After Devastating Storm

Location: Western Cape, South Africa

In the aftermath of a record-breaking storm in South Africa's Western Cape, a heartwarming story unfolded as large numbers of endangered seahorses, rare abalone, and other shellfish washed ashore due to flooding. Among them were critically endangered Knysna seahorses, found in only three estuaries globally.

Local volunteers, under Cape Nature's guidance, launched a remarkable rescue mission, collecting and rehabilitating these vulnerable marine creatures.

Approximately 1,000 seahorses were saved, with around 670 successfully returned to the ocean. This heartening community response showcased the resilience and compassion of the South African people, even in the face of a devastating storm. As floodwaters from the storm continue to reach the sea, the possibility of more unusual beachings of marine life remains.

This story highlights the power of collective action in protecting our marine ecosystems.
